The Extended Version.
Occasionally I’ll get this question. “What made you start your business?” This is never an easy answer because, in reality, I was 19 years old and put little thought behind it. I had an opportunity and a support system saying I could do this. So that’s what I did. Can any other business owners relate?
It came down to small opportunities over the years. A past teacher at my alma mater called me to see if I was interested in filming her wedding. This teacher, only calling me because I worked a film scholarship with the Ragin’ Cajuns Athletic Department, the same scholarship I got from saying yes to creating an “Open House” registration video for my high school. Again, small opportunities that I never knew would take me on this big, winding journey.
Skip five years, I’ve filmed and edited over 150 weddings as a solo gig named SolaFide Productions. I’ve graduated from college with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communications and a concentration in Visual Arts. I have worked in and out of the best agencies in South Louisiana and learning so much along the way. I saw the opportunity to work for myself full-time. And I said yes to that opportunity, too.
I never knew where it would lead me. Just like at 19 years old, I jumped in headfirst. This time with one or two more responsibilities to tend to, like a wedding of my very own in 6 months. And I still have never regretted a second of it.
Going 110% in on yourself can be fun, scary, exciting, and every single feeling in between. You ask yourself every question in the book. Will I be happy? What will this all entail? What will it lead to? Will I succeed or fail? Can I do this? Again, can any other business owners relate?
Then, I realized that 5 years ago, I never had the answers to any of these either - besides the first. Will I be happy?
I’ve known for a long time that I loved storytelling and if I could spend more time in my life behind a computer or camera helping to share people’s stories… Well, they say to do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life. This is the work that matters to me.
I am grateful to do the work that I love. Thank you to everyone that has supported me and given me the opportunities that led to this point.
